Manatee commissioners to vote on reinstalling Confederate monument to courthouse grounds. Here's what the public is saying
Poll question: What do you think should happen to the monument?
The Manatee County Commission on Jan. 31 will consider whether to reinstall a monument to the Confederate soldiers in the U.S. Civil War to the grounds of the Historic Courthouse in downtown Bradenton, according to the agenda for the meeting.
The obelisk-style monument broke into at least three pieces when it was removed 5 1/2 years ago after a previous commission, concerned about public safety, voted to take it down in the face of street protests by both supporters and detractors of the monument.

Recent debates about Confederate monuments in American towns and cities have been about whether they should be kept up or taken down. The all-Republican, all-white Manatee commission, which earlier this month voted 5-2 to reopen the debate about the local monument, may be the first political body in recent times to seriously consider putting up a memorial to the confederacy in a public square.
