Fentanyl is killing more Americans — including in the Manatee-Sarasota area.

The Florida Medical Examiners Commission reports that in 2020, the powerful painkiller was connected to 224 overdose deaths in the 12th Medical Examiner District comprised of Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties.

That was up by 68.4% from the 133 deaths linked to the drug in 2019
